We don’t know how you found us but we want to thank you for coming to our inaugural post for marketing business to business. Let me introduce myself. My name is Bill Priore and I have been a consultant for over 28 years. I have worked in fortune 100 companies as well as small regional firms. In my career I have been termed a “seller/doer” which is a high brow title for someone who is on their own to find the work and then do the work with his/her team. Early in my career I realized that the people above me really didn’t understand the differences between advertising and marketing….everything was marketing. NOT !!
So let’s set the record straight. In the old days, advertising was getting a slot in the yellow pages or paying for an ad on radio or television. Marketing in the truest respect is the promotion of a business through a variety of media. This of course would, in those days be participating in charitable fundraisers, buying tables at political events, sponsoring hospitality tents at PGA golf outings or buying table space at a conference geared toward your service line. Some of these marketing “events” could be very costly with little to show for a Return on Investment (ROI). In the old days (pre-1990) there were never any discussions about “Branding”. Heck most of the VP’s thought branding was something you burned into cowhide or horsehide.
Well of course the Internet changed all of that or it should have at least received the attention of the upper management. Marketing in today’s environment is easier and less expensive than in the old days. No kidding…believe it or not it is. Of course it takes the dedication of someone who understands marketing in this media but it beats the heck out of registering for table space at a conference, sending 2 to 3 employees to shake hands and answer questions and paying for all of those expenses WITHOUT A WAY TO GAUGE THE ROI.
